Visit to Britannia Royal Naval College confirms its future is safe

Totnes Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson, Mike Treleaven, accompanied Colin Breed M.P., Liberal Democrat Defense Spokesperson, on a visit to the Royal Naval College at Dartmouth on Friday ( March 28th.) During their visit they were given an insight into the work of the College, which included a chance to demonstrate their boat handling skills, and the opportunity to meet staff and students. The College Commander, Commodore Tony Johnstone-Burt, was also able to confirm that the future of the College was secure and there was no threat of closure.

Commenting on the visit Mike Treleaven said:

' The Naval College is an integral and important part of Dartmouth life which Colin and I were delighted see and experience. The training provided is second to none and the College has very forward looking plans to ensure its future in training not only officers for our Navy but also to continue the service it provides for other countries. We were particularly impressed with the commitment and enthusiasm of the cadets at this very difficult time. During our visit we learnt of College plans for the future and were even able to try our hand at handling one of the picket boats, although I don't think we are ready to take charge of a frigate yet!' He continued ' The most important news to come out of the visit was confirmation that the future of the College is secure as the Navy's officer training establishment. A £1.7 million project is already under way with Vosper Thorneycroft to redevelop the Quay area and there are plans to refurbish the student accommodation. The training programme is being realigned to give six cadet entries per year instead of the current three which will result in a small increase in student numbers. This is great news for Dartmouth and the local economy. I hope that as much of the building and refurbishment work as possible will go to local companies who deserve to benefit from these exciting plans.'
