Meet Julian BrazilJulian Brazil lives in Dartmouth with his family. He is the Leader of the Liberal Democrat group on South Hams District Council and a County Councillor for the Kingsbridge area. He has an honours degree in Zoology from Bristol University. Before becoming involved in politics, Julian worked in the family printing business and also set up his own Desk Top Publishing company. He qualified as a science teacher from Exeter University and did his training at Kingsbridge and South Dartmoor Community Colleges. He has also taught as a supply teacher at Dartmouth Community College. Julian has an excellent reputation as a local councillor. He is well known for campaigning and supporting his local communities. He is a vociferous supporter of affordable housing for local people and counts the fight for the houses at East Portlemouth as his greatest political success thus far. He is Chairman of the Salcombe Harbour Board and was the lead member during the transfer of Devon Property to the publicly owned company NPS South West at the County Council. Recently he has represented the County during the Plymouth bid to host matches during the 2018 football World Cup finals. At the County elections Julian defeated the Conservative Mayor of Kingsbridge despite being suspended by Conservative South Hams District Council. The result was reported in the local press: 'Cllr Brazil went on to win his County Council seat against a national rising tide of Conservatism. The voters had dared to assert their independence. It seemed that that they liked the idea of a representative who is not afraid to stand up for them against the ever-growing (and infuriating) forces of red tape.' (Kingsbridge & Salcombe Gazette) His main areas of interest are education and, as a former chairman of the Green Liberal Democrats, the environment. He captains the East Prawle cricket team and plays darts and euchre for the Pigs Nose Inn.
